When I began publishing stories in March 2020, I didn’t realize I’d soon be addicted to the platform and cranking out up to 60 stories a month. I’ve since slowed down (a good thing — I don’t want to drown my followers in too much content). The list feature makes…

Creative Nonfiction tips from your honorary English Professor

Beautiful woman is immersed in water on her back in seaweed. She is face up, eyes closed. Beautiful makeup, elbows bent, hands resting on the top of her head. Magic, beauty, fantasy aesthetic. Captivating.

Imagine that we are sitting in a classroom on a crisp autumn day. There are twelve of us sitting at desks that are arranged in a circle. There’s natural light pouring in through large glass windows.

You’ve come to learn how to craft creative nonfiction and personal essays. I sit…

A freefalling Fall poem

Woman laying on her back on the grass with a yellow and umber fall leaf covering half of her face. Calm and happy vibe.

Do you hear the gentle cacophony?

Leaves tumbling

Moments shifting

Do you notice the timely arrival of
Autumnal decay?

It’s in perfect cadence with the wind
chill and feel of Fall

brown chartreuse
orange bespectacled
freckled leaves
lime green
spotted yellow
umber and amber
earthy colors

It’s always the humans who need the “dog” training

Our Jackchi, Nugget, is one year old, thinks he has 999 lives (take that, Cats!), and has probably used a quarter of them up by now. Nugget tried to prove his immortality again to me this morning when I least expected it.

The October autumn chill slipped in through closed…

We are all little moons

A woman holds a glowing orb under her chin. Moon glow. Calm, reflective feeling.

Rise with me moon-feelings, as I drift into a cannabis-induced sleep.

I find the memories that wouldn’t budge take only a gentle nudge from a calmed brain. Then they bubble up, a babbling brook of mystery, resolving, reminding me, I am me.

In 2021, I realized I am on the…

We’re still married after all these years

Matrimonial bliss comes in magic moments like rainbows or sno-cones on the hottest summer day. A lot of it is boring grownup stuff akin to running a business. I get that it’s not for everyone. We’ve considered calling it quits from time to time, but the good always outweighs the…

An October 2021 interview with The Brain is a Noodle

Mom and daughter wearing shark hat and flamingo hat costumes at Target in the United States in 2017.
This was 4 years ago, back before Covid and my OCD went whole-hog. Not sure why the shark (me) is afraid of the flamingo (my daughter). Selfie provided by the author.

Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) writes up engaging writer interview questions monthly. I’d love to read answers from Rob Janicke, Rachel Presser, and Smillew Rahcuef if you’re so inclined.

[1] Does writing energize or exhaust you?

The window before writing is usually exhausting. I’m a procrastinator. I want to take a nap or play candy crush or promote…
